Smiths Castle
Order No. 2001
ABOUT:Smiths Castle is listed
in the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a
National Landmark for its significant archeological discoveries
(one of only 54 landmarks in Rhode Island). Just two years after
Roger Williams founded Rhode Island, the site became an important
trading post established by Williams and trader Richard Smith. Our
design is based on the current Smiths Castle which was built
in 1678. This building replaced the former structure destroyed by
the Narragansett Tribe following the Great Swamp Fight in which
they were attacked by colonial troops during King Phillips
War. The land on which the house was built was known as Cocumscussoc.Russ
