Cape Lookout, North Carolina
Order No. 191
Congress authorized this lighthouse in 1804 but it wasn't completed
until
1812. The Keeper's house wasn't built until 1872. The original lighthouse
had many structural problems including a weak light; it was painted
with red
and white bands. During the Civil War, the lighthouse became very
important
as that area was a military stronghold. The tower was damaged by
Confederate soldiers including the lens. When a new lighthouse was
built in
1873, it was repainted black and white, a 3rd order Fresnel lens
was
installed and it now stands 150 feet tall. The Coast Guard owns
and
operates the lighthouse and the National Park Service owns the surrounding
area. The tower is not open to the public but they do have a visitor
center
and small museum.
